Milk Carton Derby

Those of you who came to our pre-Thanksgiving funk in the lounge have already heard this. For those who haven't, Jessica Corey has a proposal for our next project.

She'd like us to build a milk carton boat to enter in next year's Seafair taking place on July 5th, 2008.

Seafair is the largest festival that takes place in the Northwest. It is a festival that is five weeks long and takes place in the summertime. It begins in July, and ends in August. It includes a marathon, milk carton derby, triathlon, torchlight run, torchlight parade, hydroplane races, and air shows.

For the milk carton derby there are two different categories speed or style, we will be entering the style category. From there we need to create a design that complies with the rules. Once we have come up with a plan, we begin to gather material, and construct a boat. After a boat has been constructed we give it a test run to make sure it floats.

Some specifications to remember are that the boat has to be man powered either by oars or wheels or propellers or such. Also the boat must rely completely on milk cartons for floatation, however above the water anything goes.

We will be working with several other organizations on campus, such as IEEE, the Robotics Club and the Chemical Engineering Club. To coordinate, I've set up a mailing list (subscribe | post)

If we happen to win money, it will go into the endowment we recently established.

The official rules are attached and more information can be found on the Seafair pages:
